The Wits Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Research Forum invites you to the next session of our monthly seminar series.
Dr Kennedy Manduna will deliver a presentation entitled “Zama Zamas as both Victims and Perpetrators of Violence in Mining Communities” on Thursday 23 April (13:00 to 14:30), Wits Mining Institute (3rd Floor, Wits ARM Building).
Dr Kennedy Manduna is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Excellence: Adaptation and Resilience at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He received his doctorate from the University of the Witwatersrand with a dissertation on mineral resource governance. By utilising praxis-epistemology and Marxist methodology, he researches pertinent issues at the intersection of political economy and geopolitics in areas such as eco-authoritarianism, green extractivism, critical minerals, resource nationalism, illegal and artisanal and small-scale mining, global neoliberal authoritarianism, and uneven development. He is the author of Extractive Industry Indigenisation in Zimbabwe: Neoextractivism, Resource Nationalism and Uneven Development.

The Wits ASM Research Forum is convened by the Wits Mining Institute (WMI) in partnership with the Society, Work and Politics Institute (SWOP). The Research Forum seeks to bring together interdisciplinary knowledge and critical scholarship on one of Africa’s most significant, yet persistently misunderstood, livelihood sectors, hosting monthly presentations by individual researchers, panels bringing together different disciplinary perspectives, and practitioner engagements with communities, government, and industry.
