Lesego Loate’s research explores the water justice dynamics of coal mining through struggles over water rights, the water regulation of coal mining, the coal-centric socionatural relations of water and water grabbing. This research interest interrogates the carbon-intensive energy economy of South Africa from a water justice perspective. Currently, Lesego is part of SWOP’s A Just Transition from Coal Programme. Lesego has experience in policy engagement and public sector consulting; and has also worked in the civil society sector focusing on civil society support and capacity building, community engagement, government-civil society partnership.
